Schouw Me Aan
Aanschouw x Art Rotterdam
When the Aanschouw from cafe de Schouw had an open call as part of their participation to Art Rotterdam 2023, I had to apply. You could present any work in the mobile aanschouw for 15 minutes but had to apply by emailing 'JA', which is coincidentally something that I have as a tattoo on my ankle. It made me feel as if I was carrying the physical entrance ticket to this art show.
For this performance piece, I used my body and placed myself in the physical frame of the Aanschouw.
Encounters and the physical body is my medium in my artistic practice.
For my 15 minutes of fame at Art Rotterdam, all I had to do was be there, hang any work and photograph myself next to it. In all its efficiency and fast pace, I embraced the moment, took my opportunity and gave people the chance to ‘Schouw me aan' which translates in 'to behold me'.
In history, the only time there were females in art institutions was by being presented naked. By placing myself naked in the Schouw, and presenting my entrance ticket 'JA', I was in the right place and at the right time to encounter my (1)5 minutes of fame, saluting all of the females that were there before me.
